Original Vintage Travel Poster, designed in 1913 by Emil Cardinaux on behalf of the Rhaetian Railway, with the striking Tarasp Castle near Scuol – landmark of the Lower Engadine – in the center. The fact that the Bernese master depicted the mighty fortress in an almost diminutive size merely underlines the grandeur of the landscape and mountain backdrop with which the Rhaetian Railway advertised its services. And even if the poster is essentially a printed painting with lettering underneath (there could be no question of graphics in the sense commonly used today): Cardinaux’s skill as a landscape painter, his conception of an effective poster and his ongoing activity as a commercial graphic artist made him one of the pioneers of Modern Swiss Poster Art.
