Whenever there was a need to draw attention to a trade fair, Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, and his winged helmet were never far away. Burkhard Mangold found this too clichéd, so in 1928 he had him dancing on his original poster announcing the ball held in conjunction with the Swiss Trade Fair in Basel.

The event was organized by the Quodlibet Society, founded as early as 1858, whose purpose was to bring members together in refined company, stage dramatic performances and literary evenings, and cultivate song, music, and humor. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Quodlibet was a veritable Basel institution.
