Sculptures by painters from Daumier to Picasso | Kunsthaus Zürich

It is difficult to work illustratively when it comes to sculptures from different eras and by such diverse characters as Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Umberto Boccioni, Robert Delaunay and Max Ernst. Accordingly, Werner Zryd opted for a very matter-of-fact, almost Swiss-style solution. Or did he make use of abstraction after all? By using the rectangle, standing for the maximum stylization of the sculpture, and the red standing for its maximum effect in space?

At least Zryd (1923 – 1996), as a child of his time and a graduate of the preliminary course at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, was very familiar with the shift towards the sober and clear. After a subsequent apprenticeship as a graphic designer at Amstutz & Herdeg – the brains behind the now iconic St. Moritz posters had set up their own business in 1938 – and a few months as an assistant to Emil Schulthess (who also designed a number of posters), Zryd founded his own agency in 1946. As a poster designer, he worked primarily for the exhibition department of Jelmoli, the Museum Rietberg and the Kunsthaus Zürich.
