It took three attempts before the people (though, strictly speaking, not the people – just the men eligible to vote) abolished the first-past-the-post system (winner takes all) in late 1918. The first election to the National Council held under the proportional representation system (which was perceived as fairer) took place as early as 1919 and – contrary to all previous predictions – led to a major shift in the balance of power: the Social Democrats and the Farmers’ Party (today’s SVP) together took over nearly half of the seats held by the Radical Liberals (today’s FDP).
