When it comes to boosting sales of stockings, shapely female legs – regardless of the zeitgeist – are always a good solution: they cater to women’s vanity as well as men’s voyeurism. These are eternal values, that’s just the way it is. However, we are not talking about nylon stockings here; Argo in Möhlin only started manufacturing these in 1954. At the end of the 1940s, Swiss women’s stockings were still made of silk or rayon.
Peter Birkhäuser (1911 – 1976) was one of the very first representatives of the so-called «Magical Realism», which flourished in Basel and lent the advertised objects an illusionistic objectivity – even though color photographs were already available.
