Opened in 1875 as a Grand Hotel, the complex sits enthroned on Lake Uri, directly above the Rütliwiese (where the nucleus of Switzerland is said to lie), and can hardly be overlooked from the Gotthard line. Like so many hotel palaces built in the founding years, the Sonnenberg has had an eventful history: in 1915, following a bankruptcy, the first of various restarts took place – the original poster was probably printed during this time. In the 70s, the property even served as the headquarters of the «World Government of the Age of Enlightenment» of the Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who was well-known at the time for his contacts with the Beatles, for example.

The complex is now a monument of regional importance, with the canton of Uri, the municipality of Seelisberg and a construction company planning to revitalize it for tourism and residential use.
