Zurich | Switzerland’s Metropolis

Otto Baumberger’s Original Poster for the Zurich Tourist Office thrives on contrast: on the one side, the old town bathed in warm light and almost cubistically abstracted with the dominating towers of the Grossmünster, on the other, the cool, flat blue and gray of the lake, the Glarus Alps and the sky. It is astonishing how contemporary the harmony of the message – metropolitan flair in front of untouched nature – and its implementation still seems today.

Zurich-born Baumberger is undoubtedly one of the most important Swiss poster designers; between 1911 and 1948, he designed a good 250 posters that helped shape the development from painterly artist posters to graphic corporate design.
