Bern – Centre for Local and Alpine Flights

An extremely rare Original Bernese Poster, published in 1929 by the city’s tourist office, which promoted Bern as a starting point for sightseeing flights and flights over the Alps on the occasion of the founding of the airline Alpar in March – undoubtedly to keep the target audience, which until then had travelled to Basel (to Balair) or Zurich (to Ad Astra), in the region.

The poster was created by the painter and graphic artist Otto Golder (1903 – 1979), who, however, decided to pursue medical training in the mid-1930s and left behind articles such as «The Arteries of the Human Testis and Epididymis, Their Anastomoses and Their Significance for Surgery». Accordingly, no other posters by him are known.

He effectively staged a Comte AC-8 above Bern’s old town, the second aircraft acquired by Alpar (Alfred Comte was one of the most influential Swiss aviation pioneers, who built his own models from 1923 onwards). Alpar, operating from Belpmoos, was founded by public and private investors to connect the capital to the international route network. It survived the war years without flying extensively, only to declare bankruptcy in 1947 – it was Swissair (formed in 1931 from a merger of Balair and Ad Astra) that was appointed the national airline.
