A furious original poster, as powerful as a drumbeat, designed in 1938 for the Motorcycle Grand Prix by Noël Fontanet (1898 – 1982), the best-known poster designer of the Geneva School, which, in contrast to the artists from Basel and Zurich, was strongly oriented towards French Art Deco. Initially trained as a signwriter and then as a painter at Geneva’s Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fontanet took over the management of the art studio of the Allgemeine Plakatgesellschaft APG in 1925, which offered its advertising customers poster design as well as billposting.
The 1938 race on the almost three-kilometre city circuit between the lake and Place des Nations was the first of a total of four international motorcycle Grand Prix in Geneva. Three more followed after the Second World War, the last in 1950, during which time five Grand Prix for cars were also held here.
