Shooting festivals were among the factors that sparked the emergence of Swiss Poster Art: It was the local organizers of these traditional Swiss events who were already holding poster competitions as early as the 19th century to select from the submitted designs the one that would widely publicize their shooting festival – an important social event. One can therefore imagine that these posters were not necessarily avant-garde.
This design by Paul Krawutschke, on the other hand, is quite modern: no allusions to any Swiss battles or oaths of loyalty, no grand metaphors or shooting targets, not even an morally uplifting lady. Instead, a marksman aiming directly at the viewer. Very effective. The total prize money of 100’000 Swiss Francs must have been quite impressive as well, especially for a relatively small canton like Thurgau.
