Davos – Parsenn

Coveted, Original Swiss Tourism Poster, designed in 1943 by Edi Hauri on behalf of the operators of the Parsenn cable car to attract winter guests and above all skiers to the cable car despite the war.

One of the most sought-after original Davos posters due to its felicitous image composition and realization: The main thing in the foreground – wooden skis and ski poles stuck in the snow against a bright blue sky – and the means to an end in the background: the red Parsenn cable car, which took passengers from Davos village to the Weissfluhjoch, 1100 meters higher up, in just a few minutes.

One of just five (out of a total of almost 100) posters designed by Basel-based Edi Hauri (1911 – 1988) for the tourism industry, all five after he set up his own business in 1942. He had previously completed an apprenticeship as a graphic lithographer and attended evening classes at the Gewerbeschule Basel before embarking on studies at the Berlin Academy of Fine and Applied Arts in 1932 – which he soon abandoned after the National Socialists’ election victory and returned to Basel. This was followed by a job at the Frobenius publishing and printing house before Hauri rented a room with Donald Brun, who was only slightly older than him, and worked on his own account (also as a photographer), almost always for clients in Basel throughout his life.
